The Art of The ‘Thiel’ – With Fintech Leader On Trump’s Transition Team, Alternative Lenders Could Benefit

Peter Thiel is famous for a lot of things, co-founding PayPal, backing Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker and being a billionaire venture capitalist, just to name a few. Accustomed to shaking up Silicon Valley with his investments and antics, these days Thiel stands to impart his wisdom on another region, Washington DC. That’s because last week he became part of the Executive Committee of President-Elect Trump’s transition team.

After speaking at the 2016 Republican National Convention and donating $1.25 million towards Trump’s election efforts, his allegiance to the campaign should come as no surprise. His support is said to be genuine too, and that’s perhaps because the two have relied on similar rhetoric to make their points.

“Competition is For Losers”

Who said that quote? If you thought Donald Trump, you’re wrong, but you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that given that so much of Trump’s mantra was focused on America “winning.” Competition is For Losers is the title of a 2014 Wall Street Journal essay penned by Thiel, that argued a perfectly competitive marketplace, an economic utopia, is flawed. “In business, equilibrium means stasis, and stasis means death,” he wrote. Entrepreneurs should instead strive for a monopoly, to win, he explained.

Winning is certainly something Thiel has done a lot of, making him a role model of the Trump credo.

“I think they should be described as terrorists, not as writers or reporters.”

Who said that quote? If you thought Donald Trump, you’re wrong, but you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking that given Trump’s hostility towards the media. Thiel said that in 2009 about Gawker reporters, and he bottled up that disdain and unleashed it in the form of financial support for Hulk Hogan against Gawker in a lawsuit years later, the force of which crippled Gawker and put the company into bankruptcy. It’s a revenge narrative that sounds oddly Trumpesque.

While there are likely more contrasts between the two men than similarities like these, both share a special penchant for winning. And more to the point, in a Trump presidency, Thiel may have his ear.

That should be welcome news to fintech and alternative lenders, given Thiel’s strong financial interest in that sector. Small business lender OnDeck has already experienced a 43% increase in its stock price since Trump was announced the winner. Enova, which bought merchant cash advance firm The Business Backer, is up 13%. That’s no doubt in part a result of Trump’s campaign promises to put a moratorium on financial regulations and recent pledge to dismantle the Dodd-Frank Act.

But with Thiel, his ties to alternative lending and fintech were made evident when he gave the keynote speech at LendIt earlier this year in San Francisco, in which he colorfully reiterated his theory about competition being a losing endeavor. “If you want to compete like crazy, you should just leave the conference and try to open a restaurant in San Francisco,” he said.

Thiel participated in SoFi’s $80 Million Series C round and Avant’s $225 million Series D round. “There are a lot of banks in the United States, but not enough access to credit,” he said in an announcement for the latter at the time.

He also participated in ZestFinance’s Series C round and both OnDeck’s D and E rounds.

And more recently, his VC fund, Founder’s Fund, led the $100 million Series D round of Affirm. The fund has also invested in Able Lending, BitPay and Upstart.

Last month, Phin Upham, a principal of Thiel Capital, another of Thiel’s investment firms, dismissed Goldman Sachs’ recent attempt to cash in on tech-based lending. “I wonder if Goldman will actually be able to keep up, because this is not a mature industry, everything changes sometimes within months.”

The NY Times reported that Thiel will not be moving to Washington and may not have a formal role in the administration, but that he will have a voice.

“A page in the book of history has turned, and there is an opening to think about some of our problems from a new perspective,” the Times reported Thiel saying. “I’ll try to help the president in any way I can.”

If truly given the opportunity to do so, Thiel’s influence could be a boon to fintech and the larger economy as a whole.

At the Money2020 conference last month, Trump was largely and quite openly derided by industry leaders. They may soon be changing their tune.

Funders Prep for the Holiday Rush

As the year draws to a close sending everyone into a dizzying holiday frenzy, funders are prepared to fire on all cylinders to fuel their retail customers with cash.

The last quarter is crunch time for funders alike, who start preparing months in advance — designing  new products, marketing and selling them. AltFinanceDaily spoke to a few to find out what business looks like at this time of the year and what’s in store for 2017.

For some, Christmas comes in August

At South Dakota-based Expansion Capital Group, the holiday prep started as early as August. “We think demand is going to be very strong and to accommodate for it, we started 60 days early,” said Marc Helman, director of strategic partnerships. The company launched four new products in August for a wide spectrum of borrowers — longer term products for existing customers and starter offers for new companies and those with challenged credit.

Since the demand peak is cyclical, most funders who have been around a while have the drill down to a science. For NYC-based funder Hunter Caroline, demand spikes up close to the tax extension period, in September and October. “We sit down with our marketing team, see which clients ramp up this time of the year and focus our sales efforts in that direction,” said Cody Roth, managing partner at Hunter Caroline. During the holiday season the company turns its attention to customers in mom and pop retail, restaurants, liquor stores and gift stores in small towns.

“We weigh a lot into seasonal businesses and have certain hybrid programs,” Roth said. “We collect a little bit more during the busy season and keep it down during the slow time.” For this year specifically, the two-year-old firm is pushing invoice factoring, purchase order financing and unsecured loan products apart from its usual business loan offering of up to $4 million for 24 months.

Plan, pilot, pivot

Q4 is also the time when companies plan and strategize for the year ahead. And for loan marketplace Bizfi, a lot of changes are in the offing. The company appointed John Donovan, a 30-year veteran in the payments and alternative finance industry as its new CEO. And while on track to approach nearly $600 million of fundings this year, Bizfi also decided to cut ties with some non-performing ISOs to increase efficiency. “We just told around a hundred sales offices we could not do business with them anymore to use resources for our own funding channels that have better conversion rates,” said Stephen Sheinbaum, founder and president of Bizfi.

Holiday Hangover

The holiday season is arguably one of the busiest times of the year for merchants, but it doesn’t have to be so for funders. Jason Reddish, CEO of New Jersey-based Total Merchant Resources advises all his clients to take the money when they don’t need it, asking clients to borrow early, put away the money and by November, have the capital pay for itself through the peak season. “The oldest problem with credit is that you get as much as you want when you don’t need it,” Reddish remarked. “You have access to cheap and the most flexible money when you don’t need it.” 

The company tries to structure deals that way for some of its retail clients who see high holiday demand.“We see a pretty big spike going into the holidays and then there is a holiday hangover where they are absorbing all the money they borrowed,” Reddish remarked. “Until the hangover wears off in February and we get busy again.”  

All things considered, funders are on their marks for the holiday. Will it be bright for them?

Secretary Clinton Spoke About Small Business Lending in Goldman Sachs Speech, Wikileaks Reveals

Hillary ClintonOn October 29th, 2013, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that one of the biggest complaints she gets as she travels around the country is “how do we get more access to credit in today’s current system for small businesses?” This comment was made at a private Goldman Sachs event hosted at the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain in Marana, Arizona, according to a transcript published by Wikileaks.

As a contender to become the President-elect in just a few weeks, she appears to understand that small businesses lack access to capital and the shortcomings of the current system. Transcript excerpt below:

ATTENDEE: Secretary Clinton, I’m Patty Greene from Boston College’s Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses. And first off, thank you for all the work you’ve done with women entrepreneurs both domestically and globally over your career. That’s really meant a lot.

My question is more domestic based. We have the rather unusually organized Small Business Administration, we have the Department of Commerce, and we have programs for entrepreneurs with small business pretty much scattered across every single other agency. How do you see this coming together to really have more of a federal policy or approach to entrepreneurship and small businesses?

SECRETARY CLINTON: I would welcome your suggestions about that because I think the 10,000 Small Business Program should give you an opportunity to gather a lot of data about what works and what doesn’t work. Look, neither our Congress nor our executive branch are organized for the 21st Century. We are organized to be lean and fast and productive. And I’m not — I’m not naive about this. It’s hard to change institutions no matter who they are. Even big businesses in our country are facing competition, and they’re not being as flexible and quick to respond as they need to be.

So I know it wouldn’t be an easy task, but I think we should take a look at how we could, you know, better streamline the sources of support for small businesses because it still remains essential. You know, one of the things that I would love to get some advice coming out of the 10,000 Small Businesses about is how do we get more access to credit in today’s current system for small businesses, growing businesses, because that’s one of the biggest complaints I hear everywhere as I travel around the country. People who just feel that they’ve got nowhere to go, and they don’t know how to work the federal system. Even if they do, they don’t feel like they’ve got a lot of opportunities there. So we do — this is something we need to look at.

You know, I don’t think — I don’t think our credit access system is up to the task right now that is needed. I mean, there are a lot of people who would start or grow businesses even in this economic climate who feel either shut out or limited in what they’re able to do. So we need to be smarter about both private and public financing for small businesses.


More recently, Clinton’s campaign has publicly stated that she wants to “harness the potential of online lending platforms and work to safeguard against unfair and deceptive lending practices.”

Dear Funders: Don’t Dial ‘M’ for Marketing

Imagine you own a small donut shop in Arizona and receive an email saying, “Hello, I have heard your chocolate donuts are amazing and the most popular item. I work for XX, and we provide small business loans, do reach out to us if you’re looking to take it a step further.”

Versus

Getting yet another envelope in a deluge of mails with a bank-check-like promotional ad for a preposterous amount that startles you for a hot second before it ends up in the paper shredder.

One of these methods is free, personalized and subtle. And no points for guessing which one.

Gone should be the days where funders indiscriminately send out email blasts or cold call merchants offering working capital. But are they?

A year ago, a Wall Street Journal article said,

“A big reason online lenders make heavy use of mail, they said, is that it is still more effective than other types of direct marketing. Across all industries, the overall response rate for direct-mail overtures is 3.7%, compared with 0.1% for both email and social-media marketing campaigns, according to a recent report from the Direct Marketing Association, an industry group.”

Mintel Comperemedia, a database which tracks advertising data highlighted the use of technology as being the paramount shift in marketing for the financial services industry. But is the transition from analog to digital underway? 

For some companies, it is. New York-based SOS Capital does not have a sales team and does all of its marketing on social media. The company sends no direct mailers, limits email blasts and instead scouts for small businesses on Facebook, LinkedIn and Yelp.

With more small businesses ramping up their social media presence, discovering leads has not only become easier but also cheaper. “Small business presence on Facebook is growing every day and finding them there can save you a lot of money,” said David Obstfeld, CEO and co-founder of SOS Capital. “Facebook is not explored by most funders but we have had great success.” The company spent $6,500 marketing to SMBs on Facebook and had 120 conversions over a period of two months.

How does that compare with the conventional methods of direct mail campaigns, email blasts and phone calls?

According to Justin Benton, sales director at leads generation firm, Lenders Marketing, it could cost about $100,000 to send out a million emails to active, verified accounts and as much as a dollar for a nice direct mail, including printing and postage.

“Even though it’s cost prohibitive for some folks and some others think that it’s past its prime, direct mail still wins,” said Benton who urges his clients to consider social media marketing which he says can be “virtually free.”

Discovering companies on sites like LinkedIn and Yelp can offer insights into the business and target customers better. “Calling a lead once and saying the words, ‘business loans’ or ‘working capital loans’ does not work, you need to understand the business,” Benton added.

Digital marketing can also help one keep better track of leads and reinvest in the ones that work. “It’s important to have a leads scoring system,” Benton said. The opposite of that, to him, looks like “Making a gumbo from scratch but you have no idea how you did it and cannot recreate it.”

Competition among financial companies will eventually force them to get more creative with their marketing tactics. Like Partners Funding for example, an MCA funder that markets to ISOs, uses incentives as baits. “If the ISOs fund three deals over $50,000, we reward them with extra points or give them marketing dollars,” said Michael Jenssen, ISO sales manager at Partners Funding, which sticks to marketing through email blasts, calls and exhibiting at trade shows.

Ultimately, the road to a lasting relationship with clients is paved with effective marketing. And the line between pushing call to action and being pesky is quite fine. “Funders have been using the same marketing campaigns and it’s making the clients sick,” said Obstfeld. “There are only so many mailers one can receive. They have to be creative about marketing to people without annoying them.”

For Obstfeld, the value in pursuing businesses through channels like Facebook is having more control over deals and interacting with the merchants directly, without any interference from ISOs. “It’s not just about saving money but the control over the deal. When there is no ISO involved, there is no stacking involved.”

The transition to moving all marketing online might be slow but inevitable. Until then, using bank check imagery to promote big pre-approvals will be more than just gags.

Funding The Great White North

As of last year, 98 percent of Canada’s employers were small businesses compared to 0.3 percent (2,933) large companies. Given this and what we know about Canada’s banking oligarchy, dominated by five large banks, it was inevitable that American alternative lenders would go looking for greener pastures in Canada.

When OnDeck set foot in the country two years ago, it accelerated the alternative lending movement by offering loans up to $150,000 CAD. But OnDeck wasn’t the first to discover the Canadian market. Merchant cash advance companies such as Principis Capital and AmeriMerchant (today Capify) have been there since 2010. Principis actually draws close to 15 percent of its business volume from Canada. But the credit that’s due to OnDeck is for expanding the horizons of small businesses who have been conditioned to think that lending begins and ends with banks. The crop of Canadian alternative lenders who do not otherwise have the resources for similar blitzkreig marketing are pleased with the industry’s promotion in general.

“We are happy that some of the bigger US players are coming up here and they are spending millions of dollars on advertising,” said Bruce Marshall, vice president of British Columbia-based Company Capital. “These companies raise awareness of the industry to a higher level and with us being a smaller company, we can ride on their coattails,” he said.

Company Capital has been operating as a balance sheet lender for five years and has provided term loans, working capital loans, merchant cash advances and ‘cash lines’ which are similar to lines of credit. For lenders such as Company Capital which makes loans in the range of $30K – $50K, the presence of bigger players like OnDeck saves them from consumer education-oriented marketing campaigns. “We cannot compete with the advertising of big companies but it works in our favor of creating awareness and becoming more mainstream,” Marshall noted.

And this not only helps the Canadian companies but also smaller US companies that feel comfortable entering a market with a leader. OnDeck’s presence nudged Chad Otar, founder and managing partner of New York-based commercial finance brokerage Excel Capital Management into considering Canada as a viable market. “We saw OnDeck go there and thought that there is some kind of money we can make,” he said.

Funding in the US and CanadaBut for OnDeck, Canada might just as well be another large US state. Most American companies including OnDeck, Principis Capital and Excel Capital run their Canadian operations remotely, treating it much like an extension to their US business with similar products.

“Our range of business is virtually the same in Canada as in the US. We don’t need to have an operation center there,” said Jane Prokop, CEO of Principis Capital. The company approaches Canada just like the US with accounts and customer service being handled in a similar fashion. “It’s a very manageable extension of the US market,” Prokop said. “It’s a smaller market so someone who enters Canada cannot expect the same kinds of volume as in the US.”

It also certainly helps to be spread across the same time zones and in such close proximity where a majority of the country also speaks the same language. If it was that easy though, shouldn’t we have seen more companies doing this?

“The fundamentals of the Canadian market are different. Our banks are established and trusted and in general do quite a good job, so the opportunity for market expansion is different than in the US,” said Jeff Mitelman, CEO of Thinking Capital, one of the country’s first alternative lenders.

Prior to Thinking Capital, Mitelman founded and ran Cardex, Canada’s first ISO which offered lending products with payment services. And that competitive edge helped him recently to partner with payment solution company Everlink to expand its customer base and offer loans online. The company previously secured credit facilities worth $125 million from two of the biggest banks in the country, The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Nova Scotia.

Picking up the same strategy, some American companies decided to bank on these big banks (pun intended) for their success. For instance with Kabbage, it made sense to license its automated platform to Nova Scotia Bank and to rely on them to deploy capital while Kabbage provides the technology and customer experience. “We saw that Canada is ripe for technology but the differences in regulation among other things made us go the partner route,” said Peter Steger, head of business development at Kabbage.

The advantages of having an incumbent customer base, the brand equity and the supply of capital usually outweighs the costs and inconveniences of maneuvering in an unfamiliar business environment that only a few firms have the bandwidth for, some companies contended.

Secondly, there is a lack of reliable and robust data necessary for making lending decisions. Since only a handful of large financial institutions dominate the landscape, the data reported is limited to a small number of players and the outputs from credit bureaus may not be sufficient for making a credit decision. “The availability and access to government and financial data is scarce in Canada compared to other markets,” said Jeff Mitelman. “Most of the data relationships that fintech companies rely on, need to be developed on a one-to-one basis and is often proprietary information.”

Having the data presented in the right format can save a lot of underwriting time. Companies in Canada find the government and financial data available to be scanty and in less than ideal form. David Gens, CEO of Vancouver-based Merchant Advance Capital noted that Canadian merchants are slower to adopt technology which adds to the woes of online lenders. “Believe it or not, some Canadian merchants still use fax,” he said.

Even as the country plays catch up, Canadian lenders consider the market to be large enough for many players. “At this time, education is more important than competition,” said Mitelman.

quebecCanada’s geographical dispersion and regional differences however are peculiar. The four provinces of Quebec, Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia make up 86 percent of the population and the greater part of the economic activity. And Quebec is often avoided, in part because of the bilingual mandate that requires businesses to advertise and produce materials in French. OnDeck and Company Capital both do not operate there, for example.

The cultural differences can also determine how customer relationships are handled, and being a part of that culture has given Canadian companies an upper hand. “It does definitely help to have a home advantage in terms of understanding the local peculiarities,” said David Gens. “Marketing to Canadian merchants is also different — being aggressive might not work very well here and they like to know they are dealing with someone nearby.”

For financial brokers such as Otar, Canadian usury laws can appear restrictive. As per Canadian interest rate rules, Under Section 347 of the Criminal Code (Canada), interest rates exceeding 60 percent per annum are termed “criminal rates of interest” and “interest” in the Criminal Code is broadly defined as a broad range of fees, fines and expenses which includes legal expenses.

“US lenders have had to change their way of doing business. Since, APR is less here, if your product is a loan contract, you will be restricted and you will have to service low risk for low rates,” said David Gens.

Even so, the business emerging out of Canada may now be supplemental for American lenders and the potential for growth beneficial to diversification.

IT’S A BROKER’S WORLD

Business Loan Brokers and Merchant Cash Advance Brokers Across The World

From east to west, small businesses are getting funded. But how they’re found and who they work with depends on where they are. In the US, where brokers tend to have a love/hate relationship with the funding companies they work with, they are no doubt a driving force in the market. In other countries, they might not even exist, are just starting to bloom or they add balance to a mature market. Is the world built for brokers? AltFinanceDaily traveled far and wide to find the answers.

Down under in Australia where American-based merchant cash advance and lending companies have expanded, the ISO (which stands for Independent Sales Office and is synonymous with broker) model has not really followed. David Goldin, CEO of Capify, an international company headquartered in New York, told AltFinanceDaily that there’s very few ISOs in Australia.

deBanked AustraliaHe believes that’s because there’s next to no payment processing ISO market there, a foundation that was a major precursor in the US towards the development of ISOs reselling merchant cash advances and business loans.

Luke Schmille, President of CapRock Services, echoed same. The Dallas-based company founded Sprout Funding in Australia earlier this summer as part of a joint venture with Sydney-based family office Huntwick Holdings. “Direct marketing is the primary method [of acquiring deal flow],” he said. “The credit card processing space is controlled by several large banks, so you don’t see ISO efforts in the acquiring space either.”

Big bank dominance was only one reason why another country’s emerging alternative small business funding market developed slowly. In Hong Kong, non-bank alternatives like merchant cash advances faced legal uncertainty for a long time. For example, Global Merchant Funding (GMF), once the only merchant cash advance company in the Chinese special administrative region, had been relentlessly pursued for years by the Secretary for Justice for conducting business as a money lender without a license. GMF fought it. And won.

In May of this year, the legality of merchant cash advances ultimately prevailed after the highest court ruled the agreements were not loans. Emboldened, several companies have stepped up their marketing of the product. But whether they’re doing daily debit loans or split-processing merchant cash advances (both of which exist there), marketing tends to be directed at merchants, not a middle market of brokers.

Hong Kong DollarsGabriel Chung of Hong Kong-based Advanced Express Capital said that there are a handful of large brokers typically comprised of former bankers, but the rest of the broker market is highly fragmented, mostly made up of individual freelancers.

Adrian Cook, the Founder and CEO of Hong Kong-based Asia Capital Advance, agreed that marketing is usually aimed at merchants directly but that it’s changing. “Since the market is still very new and MCA is only beginning to gain popularity, brokers on the market are only starting to recognize MCA,” he said. “There is a lot of room for the brokerage market to grow.”

In the UK, where Capify also operates, CEO David Goldin explained that the UK doesn’t have a lot of credit card processing ISOs so there wasn’t a major migration from that business to MCA like there was in the US. But that doesn’t mean there is no middleman market at all.

UK Business FundersPaul Mildenstein, executive director of London-based Liberis, said that brokers are an important channel, but not as dominant as they are in the US. “Our brokers are usually members of the NACFB, an organisation in the UK that actively supports and provides operating principles to the furtherance of the commercial finance broker community,” he wrote. The National Association of Commercial Finance Brokers claims to have 1600 members, one among them is Liberis.

“Many clients want the support of an experienced professional who can discuss the financial options available to them in their specific circumstances,” said Liberis’ CEO, Rob Straathof. “Given relatively low awareness of the Business Cash Advance product in the UK, this means that brokers have a key role to play in educating potential customers on when this is the right option for them,” he added.

Straathof stressed a robust criteria for the brokers they work with and explained that brokers are their eyes and ears in the market. “The relationships we have with them are not transactional, but transformational for our business,” he said.

The NACFB was also praised by Alexander Littner, Managing Director of Chelmsford, Essex-based Boost Capital. The company, which is actually a subsidiary of Coral Springs, FL-based BFS Capital in the US, sees a balance between their use of brokers and their efforts to acquire customers directly.

“As the alternative finance market is still relatively new here in the UK these brokers are important for this independent advice, and to help educate the market and establish trust,” Littner said. “At Boost Capital we work very closely with brokers across the UK, they are a critical part of our growth and fundamental to our ongoing success.”

In the US, brokers play such a dominant role in customer acquisition that some MCA funding companies rely on them to source the entirety of their business. Back in February, Jordan Feinstein of NY-based Nulook Capital told AltFinanceDaily, “We decided that the best way to grow is to build relationships to avoid the overhead, compliance, training and manpower that a sales team would require.” Nulook markets its broker-only approach as a strength.

Others take a more blended approach, like Justin Bakes, CEO of Forward Financing, for example. “While our priority is to self originate, it is essential to create and maintain partnerships in this business,” he said earlier this year.

Notably, no such guiding authority like the UK’s NACFB exists for brokers in the US so it’s not easy to track exactly how many there are or how they operate, but their role in the industry cannot be understated. AltFinanceDaily actually labeled 2015 The Year Of The Broker, when it published an article in its March/April 2015 issue that tried to capture the essence of the industry at the time. Tom McGovern, who was then a VP at Cypress Associates LLC, said of brokers, “They’re like the missionaries of the industry going out to untapped areas of the market.”

But preaching the gospel of alternative funding exists at different stages across the world. And Goldin, whose company Capify operates in four countries including the US, thinks that many middlemen here at home may not ultimately survive. In an interview, he predicted that the stronger ones over time will be acquired by funding companies and that direct marketing will only increase. “I think more and more companies are going to start building their own internal sales forces,” he said.

Other brokers are not convinced that acquisition costs will lead to the death of their businesses, especially if they’ve already found ways to reduce overhead costs. Several brokers have discreetly mentioned running operations from Costa Rica, Nicaragua or elsewhere as a way to keep things profitable. Still more, like Excel Capital Management based in Manhattan, have found that offering a suite of products allows them to monetize more customers. Chad Otar, a managing partner for Excel, said that they recently brokered a $4.9 million SBA loan. MCA is just one of their options these days. “As long as there’s small businesses, there’s always going to be opportunity,” he said.

Year of the Broker | deBankedIn the US, the brokers have certainly seized it, but that’s because most funding companies offer big bucks and quick payment to those that are capable of sourcing customers. In other countries, compensation for services rendered might be the responsibility of the broker to arrange with the merchant since it may not be customary for funding providers to pay commissions. That would mean more work and more risk for the broker.

Ironically, some brokers in the US will tap into both sides, earning a commission from the funder and charging a fee to the merchant for services rendered. And if the broker has payment processing roots, they can go a step further and earn merchant account residuals as well.

Brokers can’t exist without funding companies willing to support their endeavors, of course. While their prevalence around the world varies, most of the funding companies AltFinanceDaily spoke to, appear eager to nurture the middleman’s role, so long as they act responsibly.

“Brokers in the UK are incredibly important as independent advisors to small businesses on the various sources of finance to suit their needs,” said Littner.

And as long as those customers, wherever they may be, are getting the value they want from a broker, that role, so long as it can continue to be done profitably, will likely have a place in the world for the foreseeable future.

Motivating Your Sales Force – Tips From the Floor

Fancy steak dinners, electronic devices and cold hard cash are just some of the ways ISOs and funders these days are motivating sales reps to bring in business.

Although it’s largely a field for self-starters, many companies find that even small tokens of appreciation do wonders to increase rep productivity. “Waving a carrot in front of your reps can make a massive difference,” says Zachary Ramirez, branch manager of the Costa Mesa, California branch of World Business Lenders, an ISO and a lender.

When it comes to motivating sales reps, every company does things slightly differently. Some have more established incentive programs, while others are more ad hoc, depending on how the day, week or month is shaping up. The common goal of all the programs, however, is to give a little something to get something greater in return.

Ramirez remembers one sales rep who won a trip to Las Vegas and then continued to be the top rep for three months running. “Those types of rewards can keep a sales team motivated, hungry and excited,” he says.

From time to time, Ramirez offers rewards such as a small cash bonus if a rep meets certain metrics like getting three submissions in a day or multiple fundings in a week. In addition, whenever his reps, who are all hourly employees, hit key performance indicators, Ramirez rewards them with a poker chip. After they accumulate enough, they can trade in their chips for various prizes. Twenty-five poker chips might be worth a flat-screen TV and 50 chips could be an expense-paid trip to Las Vegas, for example.

When it comes to motivation, it’s important to incentivize the correct behavior, Ramirez says, noting that in his earlier years running an ISO, he used to reward reps based on the number of calls they made in a day rather than applications, approvals or fundings.

The latter represent a much more serious commitment and are worth motivating for as opposed to simply making a phone call, where the outcome is uncertain. “Even if they make as many as 500 phone calls in a day, it’s irrelevant if they are not moving the transactions forward by getting applications and bank statements,” he says.

It’s also very important to have clear-cut expectations; reps need to know the consequences of not performing, Ramirez says. Most top salespeople won’t need the stick. But it’s still necessary for them to know the policies, he says.

THE POWER OF SELF-ORIGINATION

One major way United Capital Source incentivizes its 15-person sales force is by self-originating leads. It provides its reps—who are all W2 employees—with merchants that are actively expecting phone calls as opposed to handing them a laundry list of names to pitch which may or may not pan out. It costs more for United Capital to do this, but it works well for the company and for its sales force, says Jared Weitz, chief executive of the New York-based alternative-finance brokerage.

“It enables us to put our guys in a position where they are growing with the company and the company is growing as well,” he says.

In addition, United Capital has an aggressive pay structure that allows salespeople to grow with the company. For instance, the pay plans are all based on how the company is doing overall, as opposed to an individual salesperson’s performance. In this way, it encourages the sales force to work together, as opposed to each person being out for himself. Weitz says its sales team understands that if the company hits x, the sales team gets y. United Capital also offers competitive healthcare and 401(k) plans and there’s no vesting period for employees to receive their 401(k) employer match. Additionally, the company does small things like Friday lunches on the company’s dime as a thank you for time spent. It’s another way to keep the sales team happy, Weitz says.

Fundzio, an alternative funder in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, also works very hard to make sure it keeps up its pipeline of fresh leads so that reps don’t have to do that on their own. Indeed, Fundzio provides them with between seven and ten fresh and promising revenue-earning opportunities each day. This helps tie the reps to Fundzio because they have a continuous stream of business and don’t have to find it on their own.

“It guarantees them at bats every day,” says Edward Siegel, founder and chief executive of Fundzio. It also helps tie the reps to Fundzio because they have constant business. “The key thing is having new leads,” he says.

wheel of fortuneAdditionally, anyone who funds a deal gets to spin a wheel in the office at the end of the business day and earn cash or special prizes like concert tickets or a fancy dinner or a $200 gift certificate. Reps really appreciate getting those prizes, which is evident when they come back to work after enjoying their steak dinner at a Fort Lauderdale waterfront restaurant. “I think it creates a fun and relaxed atmosphere feeling. A little bit goes a long way,” Siegel says.

One way Fundzio motivates reps from the get-go is to bring them on initially as independent contractors. If they prove themselves over a 90-day period, they have the opportunity to become an employee. At any given time, the company has about 20 to 25 sales reps, representing a combination of contractors and W2 employees.

Another way Fundzio helps motivate reps is by allowing them to earn residuals from repeat business for the life of the account as long as they are still employed by the funder. Many funders have renewal departments and reps don’t directly benefit when a customer does repeat business, but that’s not the case at Fundzio, Siegel says.

REVVING UP SALES WITH CONTESTS

Certainly, to succeed in the alternative finance industry, sales reps have to be self-starters. It’s a key requirement to do the job well, in part because so many shops are purely commission-based. Nonetheless, many companies find it helps to grease the wheel a bit—regardless of whether reps are independent or W2 employees.

Fast and Easy Funds, for instance, holds weekly contests to encourage its internal sales force of 15 independent contractors. One week the contest may be for the rep with the most dials, another week it’s for the most submissions and another week for the highest number of deals funded. Each contest pays in the vicinity of $150 to $250 cash. “Every week I change it up. They don’t know what the contest is going to be until the last day of the week,” says David Avidon, president of Fast and Easy Funds, a broker and alternative funder in Boca Raton, Florida.

iAdvanceNow, a brokerage firm in Uniondale, New York, runs daily, weekly and monthly bonuses for its 38-person sales force. For instance, if a rep submits two completed deals for approval in a day he or she might get $100 cash; for three completed deals, the cash bonus might be $250, says Eddie Hamid, president of iAdvanceNow.

On a weekly basis, for submitting six complete files, reps get one spin on a big Wheel of Fortune-like apparatus in the office. Everybody is a winner; the prize depends on where the arrow lands. It may be a cash prize of $20, $50, $100 or a physical prize like a 40 inch-Samsung TV, an Apple Watch or iPad, Hamid explains.

On a monthly basis, meanwhile, each team of five to seven sales reps has a goal. If as a team they reach their goal, they get $1,500. Additionally, the top producer of the month—provided he or she has achieved a minimum of three merchants being funded—receives the top producer bonus of $1,500. The runner-up receives a $1,000 bonus and the third place sales rep receives $500. The top team in the office also gets a steak dinner at a local establishment, Hamid says.

The system works because it gives them a drive to obtain a goal while also encouraging friendly competition, says Hamid, noting that he once overheard reps talking about how much they value being named the top producer. “With sales people, they are more concerned with the recognition than the prize or the money they are receiving,” he says.

iAdvance has been in business for about two years. The current motivational system has been in place for about a year-and-a-half and it seems to work very well to motivate the sales force, Hamid says. In addition, if they are having a down sales month, Hamid ups the ante for the daily goals, adding not only cash, but also prizes.

These techniques all help to light a fire under the sales force, he says.

salesSTRATEGIES FOR SLOW DAYS

Sometimes around 3 p.m., if he feels like the room is starting to quiet, Jordan Lindenbaum, director of sales at Excel Capital Management in New York, a business financing ISO, might offer $20 or $30 cash for the next submission. Or he might offer $40 to $50 for two or three submissions by the end
of the day.

“All it takes is one slow day to kill the energy of a sales rep,” he says.

Lindenbaum finds that motivation checkpoints seem to work well. For instance, at the end of the month, the firm commonly gives a $200 bonus to the sales rep with the most submissions. For actual deals funded, Excel Capital is also working to implement a more concrete revenue-based bonus system as well, Lindenbaum says.

Excel Capital works with independent ISOs in addition to its in-house staff to bring in business. To encourage independent ISOs to refer business, the funding company offers higher payouts to those who consistently bring in high quality deals than to ISOs who bring in deals sporadically.

Chad Otar, co-founder and managing partner at Excel Capital, says a key piece of motivating sales reps is to make sure the sales manager feels motivated as well. Accordingly, the firm also makes sure to motivate Lindenbaum with larger payments for doing an outstanding job of motivating the sales force to bring in deals. “We need to motivate the sales manager so the sales manager motivates the people on the phone. It’s a chain effect. You motivate one and it motivates the others,” he says.

Excel Capital also believes in the power of team rewards. Recently, for instance, company executives treated all staffers to a steak dinner at Delmonico’s in New York City. “We’ve done it many times so our team knows they are appreciated and that our goals were met because everyone worked together,” Otar says.

THE SALARY VS COMMISSION CONUNDRUM

Paying reps a base salary in addition to commissions is another strategy some ISOs use to motivate sales reps. A salary is especially meaningful to reps just starting out, notes Ramirez of World Business Lenders.

He says he has worked with a lot of ISOs and many of them don’t want to pay reps a base salary because they feel it’s a mistake to give them a cushion. Because by doing so, reps get comfortable and when they get comfortable, they don’t push deals—or so the thinking goes. But Ramirez believes this is counterproductive to the rep’s career and the ISO’s sales.

He believes reps should be given a big enough base while they are learning the industry—say for 90 days. Giving them $2,500 a month or so, motivates them and it doesn’t choke their possibility for survival. “You have to give every salesperson the opportunity to succeed. Give them some coaching, give them some guidance, give them a little time. But if there’s no possibility of that rep succeeding or being an asset to your team, it’s important to remove them as efficiently as possible,” he says.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but removing dead weight is also motivating for reps who are really working hard to sell, Ramirez says. To keep that person is demoralizing for the other reps—who may feel they don’t have to work as hard either or who feel they have job security even without doing their best. “It fosters complacency,” he says.

Can Technology Be More Than Automation?

In yet another Lending Club exposé, Bloomberg revealed the identity of the man who allegedly first discovered suspicious Lending Club loans that would later be confirmed connected to disgraced CEO Renaud Laplanche in a post-resignation audit. Brian Sims, a retail investor in Lending Club loans used a specially designed algorithm to spot patterns such as multiple loans made to a single borrower at different interest rates. No easy task considering Lending Club takes great strides to protect borrower identity.

And this truly is the argument both for and against technology. Irrespective of what side of the debate you’re on, it’s hard to argue its indispensability in day to day business. It’s the one thing CEOs think long and hard about and rightly so — automation makes or breaks the size and scale of a business, vastly improves productivity and narrows if not eliminates the margin for human error (up for debate).

So, at AltFinanceDaily we were curious to discover how small business financing companies use technology in their companies, what processes are automated and which side of the man vs machine debate they fall on.

Boston-based Forward Financing that makes merchant cash advances, working capital finance and small business loans up to $300,000 started investing in proprietary software right from the beginning, four years ago. It uses Salesforce for customer relations and basic reporting.

Its underwriting tool, channels leads and performs varying levels of automation to underwrite files quicker. The app pulls data from a number of different sources like credit bureaus, public record databases, social media and Google APIs before it goes to an underwriter. “Our goal over the next 3-4 months is to automate a percentage of all the deals that comes through the system,” said CEO Justin Bakes.

The company also has a banking application, a portal where customers log in with their bank details, with read-only access to their bank accounts to identify and analyze transactions which are then used to underwrite. Separately, it also has a portfolio management system that manages all the funding, transactions and all the collections.

While Bakes started investing in technology early on, it wasn’t until a year and a half ago that he tried automated underwriting. “Some hear the word automation and think they are going to lose their jobs,” said Patrick Hereford, Director of Technology at Forward Financing.  “I can understand that automation can reduce jobs, but here, they found that they could underwrite more deals faster and with more accuracy.”

Hereford was hired in October last year from the TV show America’s Test Kitchen where he was working as a software engineer. Hereford makes a case for automated underwriting with proof — “We went from spending 20 minutes per file to six minutes per file,” he said. “We were expecting 50 percent efficiency in underwriting but we got more and increased productivity.”

technology vs. humansThe company hired full-time engineering staff last year to move all their tech support and development in house. “A majority of our new hires and investments have been in technology. The tech team has grown the most over the last year,” said Bakes. He noted that the company has spent over a million dollars in building proprietary software alone and 20 percent of its selling, general and administrative (SG&A) is allocated to technology development.

“There is no doubt that we are a financing company but we are a tech-minded financing company. To be a true industry leader, you have to automate a certain amount. Our philosophy is we plan to keep improving our technology and the ability to approve faster than anyone else,” Bakes said.

Forward Financing is among other companies moving in that direction. California-based lender National Funding who has deployed $1.5 billion to small businesses over the last 17 years is also preparing for a technology overhaul, trying to get access to data pools to automate underwriting. “We need to be tech driven, as deals get smaller, we need to automate them to make it affordable,” National Funding CEO Dave Gilbert told AltFinanceDaily earlier.

And five-year-old Pearl Capital is on a similar journey. The company grew its tech team from two to twelve people over a year and a half ago including data analysts and statisticians and is making significant investments in scoring technology, portfolio management and risk assessment. “We had a human model running successfully for years and they produce good results but move to machine is additive and supplemental,” said CEO Sol Lax. “Data and tech add a lot more texture and nuance to the market, it’s like the weather radar, you have visibility and can price accordingly.”

But technology doesn’t have to necessarily mean automating underwriting. In fact, there is a strong bastion of people actively resisting it. Isaac Stern, CEO of New York-based Yellowstone Capital is one of them. “I am going to get my underwriters as much information as possible – background check, credit check to make good decisions but that does not mean I am going to let a computer decide whether to fund or not.”

That doesn’t mean Stern doesn’t care about efficiency. In fact, Yellowstone has invested over a million dollars over the last year in ramping up technology. It hired AIG’s chief data scientist and has improved data mining with access to over 140 data points including SIC codes, credit scores and loan history. The company uses an application called Clear®, a Thomson Reuters product, through which it can conduct background checks as well as review business history and public records.

No matter what camp you belong to, there are strong arguments to be made for each side and it really comes down to the philosophy of the matter. But in a crowded lending market, does it make sense to grab every opportunity to scale better?

“Different people have different thoughts on whether this is frankenstein going off the rails or not and whether that will blow up or not,” said Lax. “But the barrier to entry is low as a funder, and the spend on tech can be small yet profitable.”

There are many alternative finance companies who believe that staying in the game requires some change in incumbent models to boost efficiency and speed that’s driven by auto approvals and declines. But there are also some like Stern who treat technology as an aid rather than an aim.

Perhaps time will tell which system is better.
